Recently, I have found myself in an intense situation where I am having to advocate for one of my children. I first started off soft slow and timid – being agreeable to what was put in front of me, to then rising to the occasion by a way of discernment and roaring a loud “NO” to what appears to be an embellished representation of what the exact situation is. Sometimes the enemy of your soul, in an attempt to whip you down, will look for subtle ways to twist things around in order to bring about pandemonium and confusion. Are there elements of what he is saying in there? maybe. But he can so easily twist a mosquito bite incident around and call it life threatening if you lose guard. But a new level of motherhood unlocked in me recently. I put on my big girl pants. Roaring and rising to the occasion every step of the way. On my knees at night, but my face set like a flint in the day – Advocating for my child, one winning day at a time.
As I advocate for my precious child as fiercely as I am in this instance. God as Advocate stands out to me this week, as I ponder on God’s advocacy for us. He not only does so when we are defenceless, interestingly He also does so when we are guilty.
“My little children, I am writing these things to you so that you may not sin. But if anyone does sin, we have an advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous” – 1 John 2:1 ESV
You probably need to read this many times for it to sink in. Whilst God’s heart for you and I is to be victorious over sin and to conquer the flesh. He is also very aware of our humanity. Jesus does not excuse sin; instead, He points to His own atoning sacrifice (propitiation) on the cross as full payment for our wrongs. So when the enemy comes as the accuser of the brethren, guess who rises to the occasion? Jesus christ the son of God. Reflecting on this, I imagine what it would feel like if I were advocating for my child in a situation that was justified? Whilst I may still be well within my rights to do so as the mother of my child, it may mean standing on no leg to do it sometimes. But our heavenly Father advocates for us in full rights. He stands ten toes down. His audacity is justified. Jesus is not only our defence, He is our ultimate spiritual advocate before God the Father, interceding and paying the penalty for human sin. He acts as our spiritual defence attorney and our helper before God the Father.
Thinking about my heavenly Father as the True Ultimate Advocate, has me throwing my hands high in gratitude this week. Reminding me of the many times He fought for me, even through moments where I was undeserving…..
